BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA 2019 ANNUAL REPORT Scouting family, For more than a century, Scouting has stood for character and leadership – attributes that are forged through experiences in service, adventure and skill-building. As we reflect on 2019, we are reminded that Scouting is a vibrant and rewarding program for young people now and in the future. Despite the challenges we face as a national organization, it remains clear to me that this is an inspiring time to be a part of Scouting, and here’s why: We saw thousands of youth unite time and time again to support their communities and many admirable causes by contributing 13.2 million hours of service. Starting in February, we came together to welcome young women into the Scouts BSA program. More than 40,000 attendees from more than 150 countries gathered in West Virginia, uniting differing cultures by the shared values of Scouting. From 16 to 76, loyal volunteers came together to contribute time and immense effort to help rebuild and revegetate the damage caused to Philmont Scout Ranch by the Ute Park Wildfire. These are just a few reasons I am proud to show you the impact Scouting has had in our communities and I am confident that as you review the BSA’s Annual Report for 2019, you will see why the values of Scouting are more important in our world now than ever before. This includes prioritizing our duty to keep children safe, supported and protected while preparing them for the future. That is why we work to provide our members and parents with valuable tools to help protect young people, and why we continue to advocate for youth safety in Scouting, schools and in all communities. The power of the program to benefit young people is why we work to expand and improve our efforts to continue the mission of Scouting so that it can provide opportunities to more young people from all communities in the future. Although we have challenges to overcome, we have a bright future ahead of us, and I want to take a moment as we reflect to thank each volunteer, parent, and partnering organization who has helped to make possible our progress thus far. At our high a dventure bases in New Mexico, Minnesota, Florida, and West Virginia, Scouts camped, hiked, climbed, paddled, and sailed their way to collectively spending more than 5 million camping nights under the stars. Outdoor adventure programs help Scouts develop problem solving skills and team work as they navigate difficult trails and persevere through Mother Nature’s challenges.
